Harry Hull Kramer

Harry Hull Kramer, 86, a resident of Dailey and more recently of Valentine Personal Care Home in Elkins, passed away peacefully on Monday, Sept. 26, 2016, under Hospice care.

He was born Tuesday, June 10, 1930, at home on a farm in Highland County, Va. He was the son of the late Pearly Jake Kramer and Lila May Wilmoth Kramer.

On Oct. 2, 1953, he was married to Helen Francis Vogel, who survives. Both were children of original Homestead families to settle in East Dailey during The Great Depression. They attended Homestead School and later Tygarts Valley High School together, graduating in 1948.

During high school, he played basketball with some of Tygarts Valley’s most talented players of the late 1940s. Coach William Weber gave him the nickname “Buck” as he is known to many. It was there that he developed a great love of sports which he shared with his sons even to his final days as they commented on the play-by-play of the latest games most evenings. He always rooted for the     underdog.

As a father, Harry was role model and hero to his family. He was always willing to help someone expecting no reward. If you needed someone to rebound your shots, pitch batting practice or throw passes, fish all night and give great advice, he was always there selflessly. He had unending patience as a grandfather, whether finding just the right tool or trinket needed from his collection in the shed, making the most delicious applesauce for Sunday supper from the backyard tree or silently dumping five-gallon buckets of green tomatoes picked by his “helpers.” He was the handyman, the provider and a devoted husband.

He served 20 years in the United States Air Force, serving overseas during the Korean War and Vietnam War. He was then employed by Harry B. Moore Electric and later worked for General Service Administration at the Forestry Building in Elkins until his retirement in 1993.

He was a lifelong member of the Valley Bend Presbyterian Church located on the hill in East Dailey, where he served as groundskeeper for many years.

Also surviving are three sons, Harry Alan and wife, Denise, of Glenmore, Randall Lane of East Dailey and Steven Brian of Elkins; four grandchildren, Kadra Casseday and husband, Adam, Karly Wallace and husband, JC, Curtis Kramer and Kary Kramer; and two great-grandsons, Vernon Roy Casseday and Norman Wesley Casseday.

Harry was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Preceding him in death, besides his parents, were his brothers, Fred Kramer, Dale Kramer, and Sterl Kramer; and sisters, Nina Smith and Mary Lee Moseley as well as his daughter-in-law, Michelle “Shelley” Kramer.

The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the ladies of Valentine Personal Care Home for their care given over the past three years.

In honoring Harry’s wishes, services will be private, and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

The Randolph Funeral Home and Cremation Services has been entrusted with the arrangements for Harry Hull Kramer.  Send online condolences to the family at www.therandolphfuneralhome.com.
