Jonas Johnson Jr.

Jonas Johnson Jr., 81, a resident of Elkins, passed away Sunday, Dec. 18, 2016, at his home. He had been in declining health.

He was born Jan. 7, 1935, at Hendricks, a son of the late Jonas E. Johnson and the late Laura White Johnson.

On July 23, 1956, at Davis, he married Janice Fout Johnson, who preceded him in death July 27, 2016.

He is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Also preceding him in death were one sister, Helen Johnson Davis; and one brother, Ronald Lee Johnson.

Jonas was a veteran of the United States Army serving in the 11th Armored Cavalry, Regensburg, Germany, for two years and served in the Army Reserves for four additional years. He was employed at Schuttig Electronics in Washington, D.C., as an electronic assembler and was employed as a production control dispatcher for Thompson Products in Cleveland, Ohio, for several years. He was a plant manager for Thomas-Davis Manufacturing in Thomas for many years, owner-operator of JR’s Woodworking at Thomas and was an ordained elder at Thomas Presbyterian Church for several years. Jonas entered the ministry of the United Methodist Church in 1974. He attended Fairmont State College and West Virginia Wesleyan College and completed his fifth year of Ministerial Course of Study at Duke University at Durham, N.C. He served in the ministry at Cross United Methodist Church, St. Johns United Methodist Church at Parsons, St. George-Leadmine Charge, Albright United Methodist Church, North Elkins United Methodist Charge and retired from active service in 1998 with 24 years of service. Jonas was then reappointed to serve as associate pastor for the First United Methodist Church in Elkins until retiring in 2003.

Friends may call from 10-11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 22, at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Dr. Basil A. Hensley and the Rev. Dallas Forren officiating. Interment will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery near Thomas.
