Gerald Jackson ‘Jerry’ Maynard

Mr. Gerald Jackson ‘Jerry’ Maynard, 82, a resident of Elkins, passed away Thursday, Jan. 12, 2017, in Elkins Rehabilitation and Care Center in Elkins, surrounded by his family.

Gerald was a graduate of Logan High School with the class of 1952. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in pre-seminary from Davis & Elkins College in Elkins and continued his education at Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Va. He attended Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich., earning a master’s degree in social work. Gerald was an ordained Presbyterian minister, having been the pastor at Glenville Presbyterian Church in Glenville  and Dunbar Presbyterian Church in Dunbar. His career in social work encompassed many years at the Oakland Family Services based out of Berkley, Mich., and Pontiac, Mich,. and at the Elkins Counseling Center in Elkins. He was also an accomplished pianist, historian, and intellect.

Gerald was born Oct. 6, 1934, in Williamson, to the late Anne Tabitha Hamrick Maynard and Samuel Jackson Maynard of Logan and later, Scott Depot.

He is survived by his three sons and their families, Samuel Arling Maynard and his wife, Robin, of Bridgeport, James Kenneth “Ken” Maynard and his wife, Ralphene, of Elkins and Jonathan Seth Maynard and his wife, Candace, of Elkins; as well as his first wife, Fay McGee Maynard of Elkins, mother of his three sons. He is also survived by his second wife, Carol Mullins Maynard and daughter, Lisa Mullins Dvorin and her husband, David, of Pittsburgh, Pa. He is also survived by 12 loving grandchildren, Meagan, Brandon, Danielle, Matthew, Jessica, Jack, Emma, Chloe, Samuel, Zoe, Miles and Ian.

Gerald was interested in advancing medical science and chose to donate his body to the West Virginia Human Gift Registry at the Lewisburg School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg. In accordance with Gerald’s wishes, the family asks not to send flowers or donations at this time, and a memorial service will be held in June.
