Iona Mae George Pharis
Mrs. Iona Mae George Pharis, 92, a resident of Audra Park Road, Belington, went home to be with the Lord late Monday evening, Jan. 9, 2017, in the comfort of her home.
She was born April 7, 1924, at Barbour County, a daughter of the late Odie Blane and Elsie Dale Helwig George.
On Nov. 4, 1946, she was united in marriage to Roy Mason Pharis, who preceded her in death Feb. 2, 1979. She is survived by one son, Kenneth Pharis and wife, Patricia, of Paris, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Doug Pharis wife, Chris, Joe Pharis and wife, Kelli, Mickey Zwick and husband, Darren, Tina and Steve Ingram, Brenda Bennett, Cynthia Evix, and Vickie Haymond; four great-grandchildren, Kirsten Zwick, Caitlyn Horton, Cammie Tallman and Kendra Johnson; two great-great-grandchildren, Haidyn Harrison and Mason Horton; five sisters, Lucille Clark and husband, Roger, of Akron, Ohio, Vonda Abott and husband, Junior, of South Carolina, Tink Davis of Belington, Velma Karickhoff of Buckhannon and Ruth George of Ellamore; and two brothers, Carl George of Virginia, Neil George and wife, Kay, of Belington. Also surviving is a good friend and caregiver, Wilma Cutlip.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Hubert Pharis; two sisters, Cindy Phillips and Edith Karickoff; and one brother, Samuel Arley Geroge.
Iona attended The Sipe Grade School in Barbour County and was a homemaker. During World War II she worked as a shell loader, placing shells in the casing to help in the war effort. She was a member of The Light of Christ Chapel and loved to sew, crochet, embroidered and make quilts. She loved the outdoors and loved to travel and was proud of the fact that she had visited all 50 states. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Friends will be received at Talbott Funeral, 56 N. Brandenburg St. in Belington Thursday, Jan. 12, from 6-9 p.m. and again Friday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., the funeral hour when final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Jimmie E. Tallman officiating. Interment will follow in Trinity Cemetery.
