Mary Ethel Wheeler Canfield

Mary Ethel Wheeler Canfield, 93, a resident of Elkins, departed this life Sunday morning, Jan. 22, 2017, in Nella’s Nursing Home at Crystal Springs, surrounded by her loving family. She had been in declining health.

She was born Sunday, Sept. 30, 1923, at Huntersville, a daughter of the late Emmett Walter and Anna Crystal Thomas Wheeler.

On June 14, 1941, at Elkins, she was married to Virgil Alba Canfield, who preceded her in death April 22, 1997.

Surviving are two daughter, Saundra Jean Smith of Bunker Hill and Linda L. Allen of Elkins; one brother, James Ralph Wheeler of Elkins; five sisters, Martha Ruth Wilmoth of Elkins, Mabel L. Johnson of Harrisonburg, Va., Elva Shinaberry of Baltimore, Md., Janet Carr of Holly, Mich., and Brenda McCauley of Montrose; five grandchildren, Steffanie Simpson, Tracey Weese Shank, Jack Smith, Sandy Bibey and Leslie Weese Hart; and seven great-grandchildren, Amber Riner, Brian Tyler Smith, Savannah Bibey Smith, Roger Joseph “R.J.” Shank II, Madison Paige Hart, Kennedy L. Hart and Matthew Simpson.

Preceding her in death were two brothers, Emmett “Bud” Wheeler and Walter Norman Wheeler; and two sisters, Twila Jacqueline Skinner and Yolanda Wheeler.

She attended the schools of Randolph County, was a homemaker and a Methodist by faith. She enjoyed taking pictures and loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home Thursday, Jan. 26, at 1 p.m. The Rev. Rick Price will officiate, and interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery at Elkins.
