Roger Earl Cain

Roger Earl Cain, 72, of Marlinton, passed away Jan. 9, 2017, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital, after having been involved in a vehicle accident near Renick.

Roger was preceded in death by his father, Earl J. Cain; his mother, Edith M. Cain; and a sister, Norma S. Cain.

He has two surviving children, Roger L. Ray of Morgantown and Shannon Matheny of Green Bank; and four grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Shirley Queen of Stony Bottom; and one brother, David J. Cain of Cass.

Roger was born in Stony Bottom, Nov. 26, 1944.

He graduated from Cass Grade School and Green Bank High School. Roger spent time in the United States Army where he served two tours in Vietnam after graduation. While in the Army, Roger received the National Defense Service medal, a Good Conduct Medal, a Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal with one Service Star.  After being discharged from the Army, he spent several years working at Hercules Inc. in Covington, Va., where he worked until they closed. After Hercules closed, he worked as a dispatcher for the Pocahontas County 911 Center from Jan. 22, 1981 through Nov. 30, 2002, where he retired.

After retirement, he continued working for the Pocahontas County Senior Citizens Center delivering meals for several years where he was still working. He also worked on the Cass Scenic Railroad as a commentator for many years during the summer months.

Visitation will be held at Lantz Funeral Home in Marlinton Friday, Jan. 13, from 6-8 p.m. The funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Lantz Funeral Home with the Rev. David Rittenhouse officiating. Burial will follow in Stony Bottom Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Pocahontas County Veterans Honor Corps.

In lieu of flowers, donations of sympathy may be made to the Pocahontas County Senior Center, in care of Meals on Wheels, 20626 Seneca Trail, Marlinton, WV  24954
