Cora F. Watson
Cora F. Watson passed away Feb. 14, 2017, in Gloucester House in Gloucester, Va., where she had been a resident since 2011.
She was born in St. Louis, Mo. in 1920, graduated from high school, and married Ralph Watson, whom she met when both attended Frye Memorial Methodist Church. They were happily married for 72 years. She began employment as an office clerk with Bell Telephone Co., was a sales associate with Sears, and after moving to Virginia eventually became the secretary for the director of the Army Research Office in Arlington, Va., from which she retired. She lived in St. Louis until 1957, when she moved with family to Woodbridge, Va. She and her husband, Ralph, later lived in Arlington, Va. After they each retired from civil service positions, they moved to Alpena, then to Elkins and finally to Gloucester, Va. During the winters from 1978 until 2010, she and Ralph lived in Dade City, Fla.
She was busy throughout her life believing that it was important to stay active and to make the world a better place. After retirement, she was an active volunteer with numerous organizations (usually as secretary). She enjoyed singing, traveling, being a support to her husband and being close to family.
She is survived by two sons, Ralph David Watson (Helen Howard) of Lexington Park, Md., and Henry Douglas Watson (Annette) of Saluda, Va.; and five grandchildren, Victoria Bracey of Fairfax, Va., Heather Patton of Saluda, Va., Vanessa Blaydes of Manassas, Va., Erin Riordan of Gloucester, Va., and Evan D. Watson of Gloucester, Va. She also is survived by 15 great-grandchildren and four great great-grandchildren.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at Bellamy United Methodist Church in Gloucester, Va., Feb. 25 at 2 p.m. A reception will be held in the fellowship hall of the church following the service. She will be interred in New Baden Cemetery in New Baden, Ill. at a later date.
