Eleanor Jean Bell Poling, 90, died on Feb. 9 at The Christian Care Health Center in Bowling Green, Ky.

She lived on Route 250 in Barbour County for 65 years. Her husband of 70 years, John C. Poling, preceded her in death on May 7, 2016.

Jean was born on Becky’s Creek near Huttonsville on March 21, 1926, to John and Reba Rosencrance Bell. She was raised on the family farm with her three sisters and one brother.

She graduated from Tygarts Valley High School in 1944. After graduation she enrolled in nursing school at Davis & Elkins College and shortly thereafter met her husband, on a blind date, who had just returned from WWII.

They married on Feb. 7, 1946, and lived in Akron, Ohio, for the first three years of their marriage and then returned to West Virginia.

While raising their three children Jean worked at the Myers Clinic in Philippi as a medical assistant. She also worked at Broaddus Hospital in the admissions office and retired in 1986.

Upon retirement, Jean and John traveled often to see their children and friends. They enjoyed trips to Europe, Canada and all around the United States. They often said those were some of the best years of their lives.

Jean was a member of the Barbour Church of Christ where she taught Sunday School and also worked many summers at the church sponsored camp. She was a member of the Barbour County Homemakers Club. She devoted many hours as a volunteer and tour guide at Adaland.

Jean is survived by her three children, Ky Albert Poling and wife, Norma, of Williamstown, N.J.; Karen Poling Noffsinger and husband, John, of Sewanee, Tenn. and John C. Poling II and wife, Judy, of Bowling Green, Ky.

She is also survived by six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, Kellie Poling Lula and husband, Ken, and their son Kaeden of Mt Royal, N.J.; Nicole Noffsinger Frazier and husband, Jeff, and their children Jackson, Loulie and Sam, of Sewanee, Tenn.; Tasha Noffsinger Clingempeel and husband, Matt, and their children, Lily, Henry and Max of Midlothian, Va.; Julianne Noffsinger Hess and husband, Brian, and their children, Brianna and Tucker of Nutter Fort; Justin Poling and wife, Rebecca, of Nashville, Tenn.; and Josh Poling and wife, Chelsey, of Bowling Green, Ky.

Jean is survived by three sisters: Ima Jones, of Zeniople, Pa.; Geneva Jeffries, of Ashland, Ohio, Jo Ellen Tyre and husband, Kenneth, of Huttonsville; and one brother Jack Bell and wife, Jean, of Candler, N.C.

Jean loved her family and she and John were blessed to have 70 years together. She was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother.
