Elwood Lee Canfield

Elwood Lee Canfield, 80, of Belington, died Sunday morning, Feb. 19, 2017, in Davis Medical Center, following a brief illness.

He was born Dec. 13, 1936, at Montrose, Randolph County, a son of the late John Eli and Goldie (Cross) Canfield.

On July 13, 1961, he married the former Patricia Sue Shahan, who survives.

Also surviving are one son, Elwood “Eric” Canfield and wife, Penny Kay, of Philippi; one daughter, Shirley Ann Nestor and husband, Marvin, of Parsons; two grandchildren, Brock A. Canfield and Karsen Canfield of Philippi; three brothers, Charles (Linda) Canfield and Ward (Carolyn) Canfield, all of Porterwood and Sance (Rebecca) Canfield of Elkins; four sisters, Sylvia Saxberg of Peach Bottom, Pa., Genevia Stark and Norma Jean (Floyd) Lawrence, all of Elkins and Ruth Carr of Belington; and a half-sister, Helen (Pete) Biggs of Philippi.

Mr. Canfield was a retired lumber handler and mill hand. He began his working life with Menard Sloan Lumber; moving on to the H. Troy Phillips Lumber Co., Dave Judy Lumber, Daryl Ware Lumber and retired from Hi Tec Dry Kiln Co. He was an avid hunter and loved and was proud of his grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Feb. 22 from the Schoonover – Stemple Funeral Chapel, 95 S. Crim Ave. in Belington. Pastor Jim Sherman officiated, and interment followed in Mountain State Memorial Gardens near Elkins.

Friends called at the funeral home from 4-9 p.m. Feb. 21 and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the funeral hour, Feb. 22.
