Joan Beverly Poe Baker
Joan Beverly Poe Baker, 81, a resident of Elkins, departed this life Saturday morning, Feb. 25, 2017, in Colonial Place under the care of Mountain Hospice.
She was born Friday, Oct. 11, 1935, at Elkins, a daughter of the late Elmer C. and Helen Cora Isner Poe.
On Feb. 23, 1957, at Elkins, she was married to Robert Hall Baker, who preceded her in death Feb. 16, 2014. They had celebrated 56 years of marriage.
Surviving are one daughter, Rebecca Jae Baker Whiteman and husband, Gary, of Elkins; one grandson, Joel Thomas Whiteman and wife, Clémence Cretaux, of Pittsburgh, Pa.; two sisters, Suzanne Knicely and husband, Howard “Jim,” and Karen May and husband, Jim, all of Ocala, Fla.; one brother, Elmer Poe Jr., and wife, Debra, of Apollo Beach, Fla.; one aunt, Samaria Lee Poe Jaharis of Sykesville, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death was one brother, Thomas C. Poe.
Joan was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1953. Mrs. Baker had various jobs which included the U.S. Forest Service and the Housing Authority of the city of Elkins, Gateway Apartments, where she began as executive director Oct. 1, 1988 and from which she retired Dec. 31, 1997.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Elkins, Randolph County Senior Center, Elkins Rehabilitation & Care Center Auxiliary, Woodmen of the World Lodge 6065, Elkins High School Alumni Association, was a charter member of the Elkins Lioness Club and had earned her 4-H Charting Pin.
She enjoyed reading, cooking, camping and was very devoted to her family and friends.
The family will receive friends at the First Baptist Church of Elkins Saturday, March 4, from noon to 2 p.m. On Saturday, at 2 p.m., a funeral service will be held at the church. The Rev. Kevin Starcher and Pastor L. Scott Hamby will officiate, and interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery at Elkins.
