Charles Ray Harper

Charles Ray “Charlie” Harper, 85, a native of Elkins, departed this life April 20, 2017, at his home in Ocala, Florida.

He was born March 12, 1932 to the late Charles Francis and Georgia Stalnaker Harper, the youngest of four children, the late Mabel Jones, the late Rita Beer and the late Betty Corrick.

After attending Elkins High School, he entered the United States Navy proudly serving three years on a minesweeper during the Korean War. After leaving active duty, Charlie continued his service to his country in the National Guard, being honorably discharged in 1961. After a short stint working at the Huttonsville Correctional Center, he joined the Civil Service as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. He retired in 1982.

Charlie married his first wife, Laura Jean ‘Polly’ Shrader, in 1953 and, in 20 years of marriage, enriched his life with four children, the late Charles Harper (Doris), Myron Harper (Renee), Billy Harper and Beverly Harper Black (Joe). Charlie married Phyllis Ware Hight in 1973 and welcomed two stepchildren to his family, Ronald Hight (Dionne) and the late Steven Hight. He has 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Charlie was a member of Valley Chapel Methodist Church. He was an avid fisherman, relished anything associated with water, loved woodworking and was an amazing cook. He was a man of relationships freely offering a smile and hug to all.

An intimate Remembrance Ceremony was held by family members at his residence. A Memorial Ceremony will be held at a later date in Elkins.
