Harold Lester Matlick
Harold Lester Matlick, 92, a resident of the Blackman Heights community, Hambleton, departed this life Thursday, April 27, 2017, in Lavender Fields Assisted Living at Beverly. He had been in declining health.
He was born Friday, July 4, 1924, at Newburg, a son of the late Arthur Edwin and Arizona Wolfe Matlick.
On Sept. 23, 1944, at Red House, Maryland, he was married to the former Mary Lee Shriver, who preceded him in death Jan. 31, 2014.
Surviving are one son, Gerold Sheldon Matlick and wife, Lois, of Parsons; one daughter, Diane Ruth Matlick Wilfong Wade and husband, Danny, of Blackman Heights, Hambleton; two sisters, Lucille Knotts and companion, Luther Shahan, of Marcus and Velma Jean Shaffer and husband, Karl Jr., of Tacy; three grandchildren, Michael Sheldon Matlick and wife, Whitney, Matthew Scott Wilfong and wife, Jaymie, and Dana Ellen Matlick Mahanes and husband, Steve; two great-grandchildren, Lyndsay Hart and Hunter Mahanes; one great-great-grandson, Ryder Hart; and one nephew, Tony Palma.
Preceding him in death are one son, Keith Edmund Matlick; and one daughter, Carla Jean Matlick; one brother, Howard Dale Matlick; two sisters, Hazel Marie Zinn and Elsie Virginia Shingleton; and his former son-in-law, Scott Wilfong.
He was a graduate of Fellowsville High School with the class of 1942. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving during World War II. He attended Fairmont State and West Virginia University. Mr. Matlick was owner and operator of Dairy Farms in the 1950s. He worked for the USGA as a soil conservation technician and retiring in 1984, as a conservationist. He then worked for the West Virginia Soil Conservation District in Philippi, and later worked for Sunrise Construction. He was a member of Parsons Kiwanis, Osiris Shriners, Pythagoras Lodge 128 A.F.&A.M. of Parsons and First United Methodist Church of Parsons. He helped design and build the golf course in Holly Meadows and was the first person to make a hole in one. He enjoyed driving to the restaurant in the mornings for biscuits and gravy and talking with his friends.
The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons Sunday from 5-8 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home Monday, May 1, at 11 a.m. The Rev. William Brown and the Rev. Dave Snyder will officiate, and interment will follow in Mt. Zion Cemetery at Preston County, where the United States Navy Guard, Preston County Honor Guard and Tucker County Veterans Association will conduct full military honors; and the Pythagoras Lodge 128 A.F. & A.M. will conduct masonic graveside rites.
