Joyce Kay Powers Maize

Joyce Kay Powers Maize, 73, a resident of Elkins, departed this life Monday, April 17, 2017, in West Virginia University Hospital Ruby Memorial at Morgantown.

She was born Friday, Dec. 31, 1943, at Spruce, a daughter of the late Francis Kudora and Dovie Lillian Howell Powers.

On June 9, 1962, at Elkins, she was married to John Francis Maize, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, John Francis Maize IV and wife, Debra, of Somerset, Pennsylvania, and Kenneth Ray Maize and wife, Cindy, of Norton; two daughters, Kathy Bee Spencer and husband, Kenneth, of Buckhannon and Barbara Lynn Golden and husband, Brian, of West Milford; two sisters, Okareta Blake and husband, Bob, of Front Royal, Virginia, and Wanda Sharp of Elkins; and 10 grandchildren, Megan Burge, Morgan Burge, Kudora Maize, Cassie Maize, Cheyenne Maize, Allyssa Maize, Tehya Maize, Andrew Burge, Tiffany Ware and husband, Daniel, and Brandon Riffle.

Also preceding her in death were two brothers, Francis Murl Powers and Jerry Powers; and four sisters, Juanita Fansler, Arveda Damon, Bernice McClain and Brenda Powers.

She attended the schools of Pocahontas County. She worked at Davis Medical Center, where she was a nurse’s aide, and at the time of her retirement, she was a unit secretary tech. She was a member of Randolph Chapter 74 Order of the Eastern Star and a member of Elkins Church of the Brethren. Joyce enjoyed reading and crochet, and she made everyone in her family an afghan. She loved to talk on the phone, her children and grandchildren could always count on a phone call from her daily, and spending time with her grandchildren. She truly was the glue that held the family together.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins Friday from 5-7 p.m., with the Randolph Chapter 74, Order of the Eastern Star service at 7 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home Saturday, April 22, at 11 a.m. Pastors Mark Teets and LaDeana Teets will officiate, and interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery at Elkins.
