Dixie Lee Whitt Martin, 79, a resident of Elkins, departed this life Wednesday, June 21, 2017, in WVU Ruby Memorial Hospital Hospice Unit, with her family by her side and under the care of West Virginia Caring. Her endless, selfless, service is complete, and she is finally taking a rest.

She was born Thursday, July 22, 1937, at Elkins, a daughter of the late James Lascar and Iona Rae Robinson Whitt.

On June 16, 1962, at Elkins, at the Otterbein United Methodist Church, she was married to Stephen Allen Martin, who survives They had celebrated 55 years of marriage.

Also surviving are four children, Stephen Lee Martin of Fraziers Bottom, Tammy Rae Durrett and friend, Gary, of Gassaway, Cathy Ann Varney and husband, Chuck, of Elkins and James Allen Martin and friend, Robin, of Elkview; one sister, Beverly Hammer of Dayton, Ohio; nine grandchildren, Jessica, Ricky, Amber, Caitlyn, Stephanie, Geri Leigh, Stephen, Aliyah and Lexie; and several great-grandchildren, all will miss her terribly.

She was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1957. While Dixie wasn’t only the center of the universe for her family, she was also heavily involved with volunteer organizations. Literally at birth, her mother signed her up as a member with the Degree of Honor, her most cherished organization, where she remained an active member until her death. While serving in the Degree of Honor, she held numerous local, state and national offices. She was the current junior director of the Elkins Honor U youth group, state and local secretary/treasurer and was recognized as the recipient of the adult volunteer of the year award in 2016. She also volunteered at the Salvation Army Elkins Unit for many years. In her teens, she was a sergeant in the Civil Air Patrol. Dixie had been a retired homemaker for several years and enjoyed hosting holiday and family gatherings. She loved spending time with her children and their families. Prior to retirement, Dixie worked as an assistant manager at Manos Theater on Davis Avenue. She was also employed by G.C. Murphy Co. and Montgomery Ward.

Mrs. Martin’s request for cremation was honored. The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins Tuesday, June 27, from 10 a.m. until noon. On Tuesday at noon, a celebration of life service will be conducted by the Rev. Richard Martin, and inurnment will follow in American Legions’ Little Arlington Cemetery at Cravensdale.

The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the H.W.
