Charles Virgil Shaffer, 92, of Buckhannon, died Tuesday, July 25, 2017, in West Virginia Veterans Nursing Facility of Clarksburg.

He was born June 3, 1925 in Lantz, a son of the late James Francis and Lena Florence Markley Shaffer.

On Nov. 19, 1947, he married Angela Doris Bennett, who preceded him in death Feb. 18, 2015.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one son, Charles Edward Shaffer; one granddaughter, Catherine Shaffer; and one brother, Edward L. Shaffer.

He is survived by one daughter, Diane Kimble and husband, Wayne, of Buckhannon; one son, William Wayne Shaffer and wife, Sandy, of Union City, Pennsylvania; five granddaughters, Anna Leigh McClung of Buckhannon, Ella Marie Hicks and husband, Matt, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Angela, Jennifer and Elizabeth Shaffer, all of Union City, Pennsylvania; three grandsons, James “Jimmy” Kimble and wife, Collette, of Volga, Patrick Wayne Shaffer of Union City, Pennsylvania, and Charles E. Shaffer II; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Shaffer was a member of the Chapel Hill United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II where he worked as a diesel mechanic. He was a member of Franklin Lodge 7 A.F. & A.M. in Buckhannon, a member of Kesling Mill Lions Club where for 10 years he was the chairman of the Adopt a Highway Program and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3663. Before working in the coal mines, Mr. Shaffer worked as a volunteer firefighter for over 20 years and then as a paid firefighter for 15 years. Since 1993, Mr. Shaffer and his beloved wife, Angela, went to Wimauma, Florida to camp at a Church of God campground where he later became the campground manager.

Friends will be received Thursday, July 27, from 5-8 p.m. at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church with the Rev. Helen Oates officiating. Burial will follow in Heavner Cemetery in Buckhannon. The Franklin Lodge 7 A.F. & A.M. will conduct Masonic Rites and the Upshur County Honor Guard will conduct military honors at the graveside.
