Charles Kenny Kerns

Charles Kenny Kerns, 70, a resident of Elkins, went home to be with Jesus our Lord on Wednesday morning, Sept. 13, 2017, at his home, surrounded by his loving family and under the care of West Virginia Caring.

He was born Tuesday, March 18, 1947, at Detroit, Michigan, a son of the late Delanis Kerns and Elizabeth “Betty” Guibord Kerns.

On Sept. 17, 1988, he was married to the former Sherry Lee Bodkins-Hawley, who survives. They had celebrated 29 years of marriage.

Also surviving are one stepson, Chad Hawley and wife, Priscilla, of Elkins; four grandchildren, Takoda, Cheyenne, Cherokee and Trystan; two sisters, JoAnn Kerns of Unity, New Hampshire, and Norma Mino and husband, Eric, of Creston, Ohio; foster sister, Patricia Kalar and husband, Steve, of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania; foster nieces and nephews; his bloodline nieces and nephews, Donna June Reed-Pierce and David Pierce of Parsons and Bradley Kerns of New Hampshire.

Preceding him in death were two sisters, Donna Kerns and Patty Pierce; and foster brother, Ronnie Kalar.

Kenny resided at West Virginia Children’s Home for about six years and was in three foster homes. One was with Georgia Kalar, where he lived and worked for years, taking care of her son, Eddie Kalar, who had M.S., as well as doing yard, house work, canning, gardening and taking care of chickens, turkeys, deer meat and snow shoveling. Kenny worked hard all his life, doing yard maintenance for many people in Elkins, and he worked at the church and at the start of Rock Ministries Food Pantry and soup ministry in Elkins.

Kenny had a super big heart. He waved to people all the time, and he never met a stranger. He loved his dogs and football, West Virginia, Cowboys and Pittsburgh. He really enjoyed ramps, and planted his own patch. He attended church regularly, and that is where he met his wife Sherry. I think he was waiting to go in rapture so I could go with him. Our Lord Knows.

Private interment will be at the Parsons City Cemetery at Parsons.

The Lohr & Barb Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for Charles Kenny Kerns. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.lohrbarbfuneralhome.com.
