Gloria Mae Vandevender

Gloria Mae Vandevender, 86, a resident of Route 2, Elkins, passed away at 11:15 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, 2017, at Davis Medical Center in Elkins.

She was born Aug. 7, 1931, at Valley Head, a daughter of the late John Everett Vandevender and Eva Maude Orr Vandevender.

She was never married.

She is survived by one sister, Hazel L. Shaffer of Leesburg, Georgia; and two nieces, Deloris J. Bennett of Manassas, Virginia, and Phyllis J. Swecker and husband, Ronald P. “Phil” Swecker, of Leesburg, Georgia. One great-niece, Mrs. Michael “Kim” Felber of Lake Ridge, Virginia; and two great-nephews, Jeff Swecker and wife, Marcy, of Ewing, Virginia, and Mitchell Swecker of Leesburg, Georgia, also survive.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Paul Howard Vandevender; one sister, Ruth M. Moore; and Sidney J. Bennett, husband of Delores J. Bennett, her niece.

Gloria was a graduate of Tygart Valley High School. She was employed at Neal’s Drug Store and Kmart, where she retired after several years. She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene of Elkins.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 23, at the Mingo Cemetery with Pastor Terry A. Burgess officiating. Interment will follow.
