Henry ‘Val’ / ‘Hank’ Valentine Shields Rudd
Henry “Val” / “Hank” Valentine Shields Rudd, 78, a resident of Parsons, passed from this life Sunday, Oct. 1, 2017, at his home, surrounded by his family.
Henry was born Tuesday, Feb. 14, 1939, in Parkersburg, a son of the late Robert L. and Lessy S. Rudd.
On Feb. 14, 1961, he married Barbara Holt in North Beach, Maryland, who preceded him in death.
Left to cherish Henry’s memory is one sister, Naomi Harper of Petersburg, Tennessee; one brother, Robert L. Rudd and wife, Nancy, of Winchester, Tennessee; two nieces, Cornelia Chomech and Frances Gosnell; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
Henry was preceded in death by one niece, Susan Elaine Rudd. Henry graduated from Parsons High School with the class of 1956. He served in the U.S. Navy as a SEABEE. Henry worked for the U.S. Government Weather Bureau as an auditor until he became disabled in 1969. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, hiking and swimming. In his spare time, he loved to write and gave his writings to everyone he knew. He also published a book, “Hold Nothing,” which was the story of his life on the ice in New Zealand. Henry was an avid traveler. He had traveled to many countries, the South Pole being one of his favorite places. He had been to almost all the states in the U.S., but always came home to West Virginia. He was a Methodist by faith.
A visitation will be held at Hostetler Funeral Home in Parsons on Wednesday, Oct. 4, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. William Brown will officiate, and Henry’s request for cremation will then be honored.
