Geraldine June Chewning

Geraldine June Chewning, 69, a resident of Mill Creek, departed peacefully from this life on Nov. 18, 2017, at Davis Medical Center surrounded by her family.

She was born on May 31, 1948, the third child of the late Carroll Currence and Zelma “Sissy” Currence of Blue Rock. Geraldine attended Randolph County Schools and was later wed to Dale Wilson Chewning of Mill Creek. Together they shared 52 years of love and steadfast support for one another.

Geraldine truly celebrated the responsibility and joy of motherhood. With her husband, they raised two children, Randall Leon Chewning, wife Donette of Mill Creek, and Jeffrey Neil Chewning of Mill Creek.

Her constant expression of love and selfless devotion to her family was her greatest joy and highest priority. As an active member of the Jerusalem Methodist Church, Geraldine served as the church pianist for over 30 years. She passionately assisted as a Sunday School leader, Vacation Bible School instructor and especially enjoyed participating in the annual Christmas program.

Geraldine also acted as secretary to the Women’s Society of Christian Service. She exemplified a life led by Christian faith and service. A gifted musician, Geraldine enjoyed playing music with her family. She took great pride in passing family musical traditions on to younger generations, which always included a well-prepared meal and much laughter. Geraldine’s memory is cherished by her surviving family and friends through her sincere warmth, kindness and generosity, and the wisdom she extended.

In addition to her husband and two sons, Geraldine is survived by siblings Karen Shifflett of Mill Creek, Elmer Currence of East Dailey, Greg Currence of Valley Bend, Vernie McNeal of Valley Bend and Teena Wallace of Beverly.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carroll and Zelma Currence, infant sister Rosalee Currence, niece Kim Gil and her children, Isabell and Gabriel Gil.

Friends may call from 10 until 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21, at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday from the funeral home chapel with Pastor Tristen Tenney and the Rev. Pam Ritchie officiating. Interment will follow in the Blue Rock Cemetery at Mill Creek.

The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the Jerusalem United Methodist Church, C/O Beatrice Barrickman, 5527 Possum Hollow Road, Mill Creek, WV 26280-6137 in memory of Geraldine.
