Lavada A. Bennett Newlon

Lavada A. Bennett Newlon, 75, a resident of Elkins, passed away Monday, Jan. 29, 2018, at the Davis Medical Center.

She was born May 29, 1942, at Philippi, a daughter of the late Holty G. Bennett Sr. and Delma Freeman Bennett.

She was married to John A. Newlon, who preceded her in death Jan. 26, 2011.

She is survived by one daughter, Joy Leggett and husband, Dave, of Elkins; five brothers, Billie Bennett of Tennessee, Larry Bennett of Philippi, Freddie Bennett of Beverly, Edward Bennett of Elkins and Thomas Bennett of Philippi; four sisters, Patty Taylor of Mabie, Dottie Mouser of Elkins, Dortha Freeman of Belington and Connie Nethken of Mabie; two grandchildren, Courtney and Allan Vanpelt; one great-grandson, Kyson Langevin; and several nieces and nephews.

Also preceding her in death were two brothers, Holty G. Bennett Jr. and infant Gary Mason Bennett; and an infant sister, Janet Sue Bennett.

Lavada was a graduate of Philippi High School and had worked in the snack shop of G.C. Murphy’s for many years until the closure of the store. She retired from Elkins Lumber Co. and was a lifetime associate member of the Leland D. Crawford Detachment 956 Marine Corps League. She was also a member of The Refuge Church.

Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. today at The Refuge Church at Gilman. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 2 from the church with Pastor Kevin Gainer officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain State Memorial Gardens near Gilman.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Marine Corps League, Detachment 956, P.O. Box 852, Elkins, WV 26241, in memory of Lavada.
