John James ‘Jack’ Haher

HAHER

John James “Jack” Haher, 94, a resident of Charleston, and more recently Elkins, passed from this life Tuesday, June 26, 2018, at the home of his daughter, Kimberlee, surrounded by family and under the care of West Virginia Caring.

Jack was born Saturday, May 3, 1924, in Cleveland, Ohio, the only child of James Joseph Haher and Violet Noll Haher.

Jack spent his growing up years in Akron, Ohio, where he attended Akron University. At age 19, Jack enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps where he flew 42 missions as a B-26 bomber pilot as part of the 444th squadron stationed in Dijon, France, and Sardinia, Italy.

At the close of World War II, First Lieutenant Jack, enrolled in Purdue University where he graduated in 1949 with a degree in aeronautical engineering,

On June 20 1949, in Lafayette, Indiana, he married the love of his life, Margaret Lou “Peg” Fickle. Jack and Peg were married for 64 years until Peg’s passing in November 2013.

Left to cherish Jack’s memory are three daughters, Kathleen Hamrick of Charleston, Kimberlee Haher and husband, Larry Kimble, of Elkins and Jan Johnson and husband, Stanley Johnson, of Charleston; five grandchildren, Tyler Nestor and fiancee, Samantha Cook, Tate Summerfield and husband, Ryan, Wesley Tuel and wife, Jessica, Alex Tuel and wife, Laura, and Jess Hamrick; seven great-grandchildren, Hannah Summerfield, Olivia, Dylan, Elana, Hudson and Desmond Tuel and Thomas Jackson Nestor.

Preceding Jack in death besides his parents and wife is one grandson, Jack Nestor.

Jack and Peg traveled the world together including visits to all 50 states. They made their home in five states and more than a dozen cities, most notably 22 years in Parkersburg and 25 years in the River Hills Plantation at Lake Wylie, South Carolina. While in River Hills, Jack was a proud volunteer with the emergency medical squad as an ambulance driver and could be found several days a week welcoming home our troops as a USO volunteer at the Charlotte airport.

Recently, Jack lived independently at Edgewood Summit in Charleston, where he thrived and was embraced by residents and staff.

The consummate salesman, Jack, began his working life out of college with Goodyear Rubber Co. and B.F. Goodrich. In 1960, he joined Marbon/Borg- Warner Chemicals in Parkersburg where he retired in 1989 after 29 years of leadership, innovation and dedication to his sales force and their successes.

Jack never gave up on his love for the Cleveland Browns and the Cleveland Indians. He was an avid golfer and, with Peg on his arm, unrivaled on the dance floor.

To know Jack was a joy. He will always be remembered for his genuine interest in everyone he met and who immediately became a part of his life.

Jack’s request for cremation was honored. A memorial service will be held at Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church on Thursday, July 5, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Peter Vial will officiate.
