Harmon “Sonny” Shannon Jr., 79, a resident of Beverly, passed from this life Friday, Aug. 10, 2018, at Elkins Rehabilitation and Care Center and under the care of Mountain Hospice.

Sonny was born Friday, Oct. 7, 1938, in Valley Bend, a son of the late Hiram Shannon and Reva Kittle Shannon.

On Jan. 30, 1960, he was married to the former Esther Mae Collins, who survives in Beverly. They had celebrated 58 years of marriage.

Also left to cherish his memory are two children, Anita Lambert and husband, Ronald, of Mill Creek and Mark Shannon and wife, Trixie, of Abilene, Texas; two brothers, Robert Shannon of Arnoldsburg and Benny Shannon and wife, Delores, of Clarksburg; six grandchildren, Daniel “DJ” Lambert and wife, Becki, of Belington, Travis Lambert and wife, Jessica, of Fairmont, Kayla Thomas of Beverly, Abbey Lambert of Mill Creek and Cole Shannon and Anna Grace Shannon, both of Abilene, Texas; five great-grandchildren, Aiden Howe, Maleah Thomas, Wyatt Lambert, Josie Lambert and Bristol Lambert; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding Sonny in death besides his parents were five brothers, Nelson, Owen, Morris, Charles and Kenneth “Kenny” Shannon; and six sisters, Hallie Foster, Margie Snelson, Helen Arbogast, Velma Shannon, Ruby Swanson and Geneva Harris.

Sonny attended the schools of Randolph County and had served with the United States Army. He had worked for Rennix Flowers, Labcraft, Mower Lumber, as a coal miner, and had retired as a custodian for the Randolph County Board of Education. An avid sportsman, he enjoyed hunting deer and especially turkey. He was also an avid gardener taking meticulous care and happy to show off his crops. He taught the adult Sunday school class at Valley Independent Baptist Church for 26 years and was a member of the Tygart Valley Baptist Church. A good Christian man and loving husband and father, Sonny has fought a good fight and finished his course.

Visitation will be held at Randolph Funeral Home on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, Aug. 15, at 11 a.m. Pastor Jack Howell will officiate, and interment will follow in Brick Church Cemetery in Huttonsville, where members of H.W. Daniels Post 29, American Legion, Tygart Valley Post 3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the West Virginia Honor Guard will conduct full military honors.
