WILCOX

Sam Houston Wilcox, 71, a resident of Elkins, passed from this life Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2018, at home. He had been in his usual health, and death was unexpected.

Sam was born Sunday, June 8, 1947, in Elkins, a son of the late Claude Wilcox and Maxine Arbogast Wilcox.

He was formerly married to Dolly Wilcox of Ohio.

Also left to cherish his memory are six children, Donald L. Wilcox of Ohio, Donna S. Houser and husband, Tom, of Ohio, Tracy L. Wilcox and wife, Debbie, of Ohio, Kristi Nation and wife, Karen, of Texas, Kelly Luther of Texas, and Owen Chase of Ohio; three grandchildren, Thomas Houser Jr., Melanie Houser and Darren Wilcox; three great-grandchildren, Enzo Wilcox, Alivia Robinson and Devin Robinson; two brothers, Robert Wilcox of the Philippines, and Dean Wilcox Sr. and wife, Sharon, of Ohio; nieces and nephews, Dean Jr., David M., Derek L. Wilcox, Lacey J. Burns, Jeff D., Robbie, Adam and Sabrina Wilcox; and long-time companion, Phyllis Webster of Florida.

Sam graduated from Westwood High School in Tennessee, and then proudly served his country in the U.S. Marines. He had been employed as an electrician at Dale’s Electric and as a custodian for U.S. Forestry Service and the Federal Building in Elkins, from which he retired. In his younger years, Sam trained and rode horses and enjoyed riding his motorcycle. Sam was quite the country dancer and had a pair of boots for every night. Something very important to him was to support the local American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was very proud of being in the military and loved all things veteran related. Sam was a decorated Marine. In 1967, he received two Purple Heart Medals for wounds received in combat action while in support of the Forces of the Republic of Vietnam in their struggle with the Viet Cong.

The family’s request for cremation will be honored, and interment will take place at a later date in the American Legion’s Little Arlington Cemetery. A Celebration of Life with a dinner will be held at the Elkins VFW today at 1 p.m.

The Randolph Funeral Home and Cremation Services has been entrusted with the arrangements for Sam Houston Wilcox. Send online condolences to the family at www.therandolphfuneralhome.com.
