Dixie Lea Kerns, 78, of Junior, died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2018, at her home, following an extended illness.

She was born Aug. 21, 1940, at Junior, a daughter of the late Vernon Leo and Odie Kathleen (Moore) Hymes.

Survivors include two daughters, Brenda Dailey and Christine Marchman, both of Junior; one son, Christopher “James” Kerns of Junior; four grandchildren, Shawn Rexrode, “Jackie” Kerns, Ruben Kerns and Tiffany Barkley; six great-grandchildren, Layla Kerns, Gaige Rexrode, Allyssa Rexrode, Steven Barkley, Chase Barkley and Bentley Barkley; two sisters, Kathleen Skidmore of Junior and Gloria (Frank) Price of Hagerstown, Maryland; two brothers, Rick (Vickie) Hymes of Junior and Butch (Wanda) Hymes of Charleston; and a devoted caregiver, Andrea Zezima of Belington.

She was formerly married to Charles B. Kerns, who survives at Malta, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Loverine Rider and Joan Jones.

Mrs. Kerns was formerly employed in the hospitality field at Jamones in Junior and the Elkins Motor Lodge. She was Methodist and enjoyed cleaning. It is said “she kept a spotless house.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29, from the Schoonover – Stemple Funeral Chapel, at 95 S. Crim Ave. in Belington. The Rev. David Harris will officiate, and interment will follow in the Deer Haven Marchman Family Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 6-9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., the funeral hour, on Saturday.

The Schoonover – Stemple Funeral Chapel was entrusted with arrangements.
