Carolyn J. Lewis

LEWIS

Carolyn June Lewis of Elkins passed away on Oct. 23 in Ruby Memorial Hospital due to a head injury suffered in a fall the previous day.

She was born April 23, 1951, in Durbin to Avin and Mabel Lewis, who preceded her in death.

She is survived by one brother, Roger (Mary) Lewis of Beverly; and three sisters, Dianna Bosley (Jim) of Akron, Ohio, Debbie Dalton (Rick) of Lexington, Kentucky, Jennifer (Jim) Moats of Philippi and an honorary sister, Joyce Church.

In addition, she is survived by six nieces and nephews, Melissa Bosley Swain, Scott Bosley, Chris Lewis, Leslie Lewis Behrens, Ashley Moats Morrison and Shana Dalton Tetterton; nine great nieces and great nephews along with many other close family members and friends who will greatly miss her. Carolyn will also be missed by her beloved dog, Buddy, who was her fierce protector for 13 years.

Carolyn graduated from Elkins High School, attended Berea College and graduated from Fairmont State College with an elementary education degree. She also earned master’s degrees from Marshall University and West Virginia University. Carolyn had a distinguished 40-year career, teaching and encouraging students, much of that time as a reading specialist in Randolph County and the Winfield area where she resided for 20 years.

Those who knew her were inspired by Carolyn’s courage and determination to lead an active lifestyle despite having multiple sclerosis. She had fun driving the corvettes she owned throughout the years, attending drag races, vacationing at the beach and visiting family and friends.

For the last several years Carolyn belonged to the Elkins Purple Majesties chapter of the Red Hats of which she recently had been named a Queen Mother. She enjoyed many happy times with her Red Hat group.

Carolyn’s request to be cremated has been honored. A memorial celebration of her life will be held on Friday, Nov. 16, at 6:30 p.m. at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the MS Society, P. O. Box 4527, New York, NY 10163 or to the American Humane Society or a charity of your choice.
