George Cook Sr.

George Edward Cook Sr., 81, a resident of Valley Bend, departed this life early Friday morning, Jan. 4, 2019, at his home surrounded by his two children, a special friend, and under the care of West Virginia Caring.

He was born Saturday, April 3, 1937, at Wymer, a son of the late James and Vernie Tingler Cook.

Surviving are one son, George Edward Cook Jr. and companion Anette Kirby of Palmyra, Virginia; one daughter, Luanne Cook and fiance Kyle Whetsel of Cumberland, Maryland; three brothers, Howard Cook of St. Clairsville, Ohio, Gene “Buck” Cook of Elkins and Jerry Cook of Russia; three grandchildren, Priscilla Fitz and husband Paul of Charlottesville, Virginia, Heather Thomas and husband Tristen of Staunton, Virginia, and Amanda Delaney and husband Brandon of New Port Richey, Florida; five great-grandchildren, Gunner, Colby, Mackenzie, Jeremiah, Natalie and one on the way; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death are six brothers, Emmett, Ernest, Jack, Paul, Joe and James “Felix” Cook; and three sisters, Ina Mae Cook, Hazel Lambert and Edna Fleming.

He attended the schools of Harman, was a veteran of the Korean Conflict having served with the U.S. Army stationed in France. He drove an 18-wheeler for D & W Truck Line for over 30 years from which he retired and then owned and operated George E. Cook Trucking. He was instrumental in the planning and construction of the Veterans Memorial Wall in Parsons. He was a previous Tucker County City Council member, an associate member of the Vietnam Veteran Association, the American Legion and the V.F.W. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, yard work, watching westerns and was very involved with veterans. He enjoyed spending time with his buddy Charles Lowther and going to car shows. It is not a stretch to say that everyone loved George. He will be truly missed.

The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11. Final Rites will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday, Jan. 12, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Dr. Basil A. Hensley will officiate and interment will follow at the Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman, where full military honors will be accorded by the members of West Virginia National Guard Honor Guard Program, the H.W. Daniels Post 29, American Legion and the Tygart Valley Post 3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
