Gloria J. Vance
Gloria Jean Vance, 79, a resident of Elkins, where she made her home with her niece, Alicia Wetzel, departed this life Wednesday morning, Jan. 9, 2019, at her home, surrounded by her loving family and under the care of Mountain Hospice. She had been in declining health since suffering a heart attack in November of 2018.
She was born Saturday, Jan. 14, 1939 at Whitmer, a daughter of the late Arnold and Flossie Dolly Vance.
She had never married.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews and two special nieces, Alicia Wetzel and husband Junior of Elkins; and Anita Schoonover of Elkins.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Richard David “Dick,” James “Jim,” William “Bill,” and Teddy Harold “Ted” Vance; and five sisters, Mary Susan Wymer, Josie Tingler, Helen Waybright, Audrey Mullennex, and Ruth Vance.
She attended the schools of Whitmer and Harman High School. She was a homemaker, an excellent cook and loved feeding her family. She was a wrestling fan, enjoyed attending gospel music shows and watching the cooking channel.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5-8 p.m. Saturday. On Sunday, Jan. 13, Miss Vance will be moved to the Whitmer United Methodist Church, where friends may call from noon to 1 p.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. Earl Bible will officiate, and interment will follow at the Laurel Hill Cemetery at Whitmer.
