Michael D. Herron

HERRON

Michael D. Herron, 67, of Weston, formerly of Charleston, son of Willard and Toni Herron of Elkins, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2019, in Charlotte, N.C.

During his three-and-a-half-year battle with cancer Mike fought hard, never gave up hope, and never lost his sense of humor.

Mike graduated from West Virginia University in 1973 with a journalism degree and as a member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. He is a former State of West Virginia Tourism Director, Vice President of Public Relations at Charles Ryan Associates, Executive Director of the West Virginia Independent Oil and Gas Association and President of Advantage Valley. Most recently, he was Executive Director at the Lewis County Economic Development Authority.

In addition to Mike’s parents, he is survived by two daughters, Amy Elizabeth and Rebecca Christine, and Amy’s son, Michael Hudson, all of Charlotte, N.C.; a brother, Steve Herron of Elkins; and a niece, Leia Herron Drakeford of Concord, N.C.

He was proud to be a Mountaineer from West “By God” Virginia. Mike was well known in the Metro Valley as having been a former host of the Mountain State Sports Hotline radio show in Charleston, as well as being a regular contributer to the Blue Lot, a WVU sports message board. He also spent more than two decades as a freelance reporter for The Associated Press covering WVU football and basketball.

Mike loved his country and his friends, but most of all his family.

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, at the First United Methodist Church in Elkins. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the church or to the WVU Foundation.
