Betty J. Reed


Betty Jean Smith Reed, 87, a resident of Bowden, departed this life early Tuesday morning, March 12, 2019, at Colonial Place at Elkins, surrounded by her loving family and under the care of Mountain Hospice.

She was born Wednesday, July 29, 1931, at Elkins, a daughter of the late George Washington and Nettie Skinner Smith.

On May 12, 1951, she was married to Clyde Reed, who preceded her in death May 28, 2008. They had celebrated 57 years of marriage.

Surviving are one son, Bradley Allen Reed and companion Toni Myers of Elkins; three daughters, Beverly Jean Talbott and husband William of Valley Bend, Debra Lynn Conrad and husband Doug of Elkins, Julia Ann Slaughter and husband Marty of Severn, Maryland; five grandchildren, Jerid Barkley and wife Amy of Hurricane, Darin Barkley and wife Crystal of Hurricane, Angela Reed and husband Chris of Hurricane, Courtney Slaughter of Maryland, and William Slaughter of Maryland; 11 great grandchildren, Tabitha Barkley, Sabrina Barkley, Katelynn Siders, Arin Barkley, Michael Bailey, Matthew Bailey, Nevaeh Bailey, Gavin Bailey, David Wayne Thompson, Kenzie Irena Thompson and Adalyn Cooper; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death are one brother, Edward Smith and wife Martha.

She attended Elkins High School, was a member of the Bowden Worship Center and an active member of the Tygart Valley Post 3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars Women’s Auxiliary. She was a homemaker, a child care provider and later worked in housekeeping at Canaan Valley Resort. She enjoyed attending square dances with her husband at the Log Cabin Inn at Bowden, where they first met. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Colonial Place and her close friends that spent their time with her in her final days.

The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday. Final Rites will be conducted at the funeral home, Sunday, March 17, at 2 p.m. The Rev. Philip Lynn Ryder will officiate and interment will follow at the Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman.
