Burton Steerman

STEERMAN

Burton Edward “Ed” Steerman, 84, a resident of Elkins, passed from this life Sunday, Oct. 6, 2019, at home surrounded by family and under the care of Mountain Hospice.

Ed was born Sunday, Aug. 4, 1935, in Belington, a son of the late Burton W. Steerman and Mabel Brady Steerman.

On Dec. 11, 1954, he married the former Jean Corley, who preceded him in death Jan. 4, 2012.

Left to cherish his memory are two daughters, Anita Fortney and husband Loren, and Edie Brake and husband Timothy, all of Elkins, two grandchildren, Catherine Brake and Nathan Fortney and wife Christie, two great-grandchildren, Kiara, and J.T., and six siblings, Doris Christian, June Swick and husband Melvin, Carol Perks and husband Bill, Ilona Napier, Wilda Martin and husband Jim, and Charles Steerman and wife Mary.

Preceding Ed in death besides his parents and wife was one brother, James Steerman.

Ed was a graduate of Belington High School and had been employed until his retirement as a shop supervisor and a wreck master for Chessie System Railroad. He was a Bible class teacher and a part time minister for the Valley Bend, River and Goff Street Churches of Christ. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, digging ramps and cooking. Ed was a member of the Goff Street Church of Christ in Elkins.

Visitation will be held at the Goff Street Church of Christ Thursday, Oct. 10, from 6 until 8 p.m. Ed’s request for cremation will then be honored. A memorial service will be held at a later date for Ed and his wife Jean.
