Round and about Barbour County
Are you ready for spring yet? According to our “experts,” Phil and Freddie, we will have an early spring this year. It’s funny that we trust our weather to a groundhog! I know, it’s all in fun. I would like to make a prediction of my own if I may. Shadow or not, sunshine or snow, I do hereby predict that spring will officially be here on March 20.
There will be an elimination dinner on March 16 at the Philippi City Building to benefit sports programs in the middle schools. Tickets are $30. Dinner will be at 6:30 p.m. and a drawing is scheduled for 7 p.m. For more information, or to purchase tickets, call Lori Wetzel at 304-621-3307 or Buffie Brewer at 304-613-7699.
There will also be a meeting regarding the issues affecting the sports programs on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Belington Fire Department.
Congratulations to the winning Ravens as they brought home the victory at the Super Bowl this year.
Mt. Liberty Community is having a sing-along from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Mt. Liberty community building. Come on out for an old fashioned time of fun with “Strummin’ on the Mount.”
Summer isn’t the only time for a fair. The Barbour County Winter Fair will be held at the fairgrounds on March 8 and 9. They always have good food and craft tables will be set up. The basket classes are always a big hit. Hope to see you there!
City workers have been busy making improvements to the wastewater system in town. This has caused some delays, detours and lots of mud. Thanks for your patience as the crews have to stop traffic from time to time.
February has been proclaimed as National Heart Month. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S., affecting about 12 million people. Take care of your heart!
On March 9, there will be a benefit dinner for Jimmy McLean at the Haven of Hope Worship Center from 12 – 6 p.m. Jimmy is a resident of Belington and has been diagnosed with cancer. He will be traveling to the Hillman Cancer Center in Pittsburgh for treatment. For any questions you can call: Paulette Bailey at 304-457-2332 or Missy Black at 304-709-3767.
Happy Valentine’s Day to all, and I would like to wish my valentine, Jason, a happy birthday that day as well.
