Focus is important in successful gaming

“Push Start” makes a return this week after taking a hiatus last week. The last time I wrote this column I talked a lot about the upcoming Magic the Gathering events and the new set, “Dragon’s Maze.”

The pre-release for the set was a blast, even though the cards I received to build a deck were less than stellar. I struggled finding a focus for my deck and got beat in the first round. I was a little bit bothered by my lack of success, but I realized that not only did my deck lack focus, I as a player lacked focus. Looking back, as I sat down to build my deck, I think I was thinking too much about the new cards and some trading possibilities after the tournament. I was too worried about getting certain cards and my deck building suffered.

After the tournament, I took the cards I received home and sat down with them to see if I could have done better with my building, and I could have. The deck I played didn’t do anything particularly well and I lost. The early exit of the tournament gave me perspective and I realized that to do well, I have to be focused on the task at hand.

The TCGPlayer state tournament is exactly seven days away from this column. I have not settled on the deck I will play, but I am working on it. I have two builds I am currently playing and one more I am still acquiring a few cards for. Once I have the third deck finished, I will try to determine which is the best to play. The only way to do that is to playtest and practice.

Since I only generally play online bingo for money, over the next week, I will be playing a lot and reading a lot of articles online about the card game and I will try to pinpoint what I feel gives me the best chance of doing well. The state tournaments usually draw a large crowd of all ages and I will be up against a lot of good card players.

I have decided to do well I have to be focused, and have been working on it as much as I can when I have time to play cards. Next week, I hope to update everyone how my playtesting and preparation for the tournament fairs over the next week.

To take a quick side away from cards, Microsoft is planning to unveil the next generation X-Box on May 21. I am excited to see the new technology and will give my opinion on the unveil.

Until next time, stay focused and play well. If anyone has any questions or comments, feel free to email me at agaynor@theintermountain.com.
