Hello from Barbour County! It seems we are full swing into summer. I hope kids and teachers are enjoying their time off. Before we know it, school will be starting again.
Congratulations go out to the Barbour County youth soccer teams who went to the West Virginia Open Cup Championship Tournament. U12 Girls and U10 Boys both placed third and the U10 Girls brought home second-place medals.
Today is the last day to sign up for American Youth Football and Cheerleading. Signups are being held at the Barbour County State Police barracks.
Camp Popeye in Belington will be having Day Camp starting on June 17 and running through June 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is for all children ages 4-12. There is no cost.
Light of Christ Chapel in Belington is having Vacation Bible School June 24-28 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. This is for ages 3-18.
The West Virginia Cyclones Basketball Academy will be having its first skills camp, featuring former Alderson-Broaddus standout and current professional player Jimmy Williams.
Camp is open to boys and girls 6-12th grade and will be held at the Philippi City Gym July 9 – 11. Cost will be $100 or $80 if signed up before June 15. Family discounts are available. For more information, contact Marija Ilic at 304-476-0016.
You can now purchase early tickets for the 2013 Barbour County Fair for the cost of $8. To order, call 304-823-1328 or pick them up at any bank in the county.
Belington Public Library will host a living history day on Wednesday at 1 p.m. Art and Pam Dodd, from Barbour County, will bring history to life as they perform as Gov. and Mrs. Francis Pierpont. Gov. Pierpont was often called the “Father of West Virginia.”
Also at the library, every Thursday at 4 p.m., there is a time of reading for children of all ages. In addition to story hour, there will be an activity and snack for participants.
A Stomp Out Cancer Walk-A-Thon will be June 21 at 6 p.m. This event will take place on the new walking trail across from Belington Prescription Center.
Walkers need to meet at the red building in Belington. Proceeds will benefit Relay For Life. For more information, call 304-823-1800.
The 16th Annual “Smokin’ on the Tygart” Chili Cookoff will be held in Philippi on June 22. Come on out for children’s activities, vendors, music and the best chili in the area. To reserve a space or for more information, call 304-457-3700, ext. 226.
On June 23, Belington-Barbour County Little League will have a Thirty-One bingo fundraiser at the Junior Firehall at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20.
