Closures hot topic in county

Happy fall from Barbour County! I just love this time of year! I love the cool, crisp weather and the crunch of the falling leaves. I love the smell in the air, the festivals, the fresh apples, smoke coming from chimneys and everything associated with the season.

There will be a fall light pole decorating contest in Philippi again this year. Individuals, organizations and businesses are welcome to decorate a light pole in a fall theme or to design a scarecrow. The goal is to be even bigger and better than last year. All scarecrows and decorations have to be up by Oct. 1. Call 304-457-3700, ext. 226 for more details.

I guess the big news in the county is the danger of Mt. Vernon and Volga Elementary Schools being forced to close. Parents and teachers alike are opposing these closings. There will be a meeting at Philippi Elementary School on Sept. 24 at 6 p.m. for those wishing to have a say in this matter.

Other big news that everyone is talking about around the area pertains to mapping and addressing. Do you have your new address? This address change is affecting everyone countywide. There are some people who have had their address for many years, and some people are reluctant to embrace change. Just please remember – this is a state law. Please do not call your local postmaster and yell at him or her. It is not his or her fault, as they are just the messenger.

Today is the day for the Fall Festival in Belington. There will be a first ever Flaming Barbecue Cook-off on the Town Square. Registration is at 9 a.m, with the contest beginning at 10 a.m. Crafts and vendors will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Belington Fire House. Entertainment will begin at noon at the main stage and continue throughout the day. Thje parade lineup starts at 1:30 p.m., across from Sheetz, and starts at 2 p.m.

On Sunday, there will be a car show from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the Shop ‘N Save/post office area. The fire department will also be selling their famous barbecue chicken. Come on out and have a great time!

On Sept. 28 in Davis, there will be a “Run For It” 5K run/2K walk. There are many groups to walk or run with. Friends of Kasson Playground, Barbour All County Sports Organization, Belington Public Library and Philippi Public Library are some of the groups in Barbour County that you can walk or run with if you wish to support them. If you want to participate in this event, you can sign up at 10 a.m. at the Fire Hall in Davis. The race starts at 11 a.m.

Philippi Volunteer Fire Department is selling tickets for their annual cash and gun bash. There will be a winner every day, Monday through Saturday in the month of December. Contact any Philippi firefighter now to get your ticket.

Congratulations to Paul Golden, the winner of the Grand Prize Dodge truck from the BVFD Fall Bash.

Looking ahead to October: There will be a Falling In Love With Philippi Fall Festival. This will be on Oct. 12 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Crafters and vendors are wanted; call 304-457-3700, ext. 226, for information.
