Events slated in Barbour County
Hello from Barbour County. Hip hip hurray! School is out. It seemed to drag on forever this year! Baseball season is coming to an end and folks can be seen around swimming pools and at picnics. Welcome summertime fun!
Today is Flag Day. Let’s not forget those who have fought so that we may freely fly our great American Flag.
Also, remember Dad on Sunday for Father’s Day. This Father’s Day will be 15 years since my own Dad went on to meet his Heavenly Father. I miss and love you, Daddy!
Moving on to other news, the Saturday morning genealogy club will meet at Belington Public Library today. This will be a beginner’s genealogy class. Every participant will receive a free 15-generation chart. Class starts at 9 a.m. and goes until noon. Thursdays at the library is the time for children’s story hour starting at 4 p.m., while Fridays at 5 p.m. the library offers free movie nights with free popcorn.
On the other end of the county today, Philippi will host it’s 17th annual Smokin’ On The Tygart Chili Cookoff. This will take place on the courthouse square with registration beginning at 8 a.m. There will be various categories, games, vendors and even a motorcycle and car cruise in. Happy birthday to our great state of West Virginia! The Mountain State will turn 151 years old on June 20.
Camp Popeye will be having Day Camp June 23-27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for children ages 4-11. Camp will feature Bible lessons, puppets, songs, crafts and games. Lunch will be provided and there is no cost for this camp. For more information, contact Aaron Miller at 304-695-7552.
On June 27, there will be a basket bingo to benefit Animal Friends of Barbour County. This will take place in the basement of the City Building in Philippi. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
The Belington Volunteer Fire Department will be having their Early Bird Sale for Fall Bash tickets. This will be June 29 at the fire house from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets will be three for $100 or $40 each. Everyone who purchases a ticket that day will be entered into a drawing. The winner will have their choice of $500 or 15 extra tickets. Come on out and support a great cause.
Cornerstone Church in the Industrial Park will be having kid’s camp on June 29 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The theme will be Noah’s Ark and is for children in K-8th grades. Come out for a time of fun with classes, food, crafts and games. For more information, contact Pastor Shelton at 304- 823-1454.
Looking ahead to next month, the Philippi Public Library will be starting their summer reading program. This will run from July 7-25.
