Annual Winter Fair scheduled for March 2-4

Hello, from Barbour County! We sure have had a nice spring this winter!

A sure sign that spring is getting close is the fact that our local ice cream stand, the Dairy King in Philippi, will be opening on March 1.

Come on out to the Belington Volunteer Fire Department on March 3-4 and help usher winter out the door with the Winter Fair. I’ve heard that all the craft tables are sold out, so it should be a fun-filled day. I’m sure there will be delicious food and great music, as always. The Winter Fair is sponsored by the Barbour County CEOS. I hope to see you there.

Also on March 4, there will be Special Olympic basketball games at the Civic Center in Belington. Games last from noon to 3 p.m., and all monies raised will help send the Special Olympics team to Morgantown. The cost at the door is $2 per person. This sounds like a lot of fun.

Relay For Life is hosting a Longaberger Basket Bingo at the Belington Fire Department from 2-5 p.m. on March 5. All proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society. The Longaberger Baskets will be filled with goodies, and the cost is $20 for each packet. Come on out for an auction, door prizes and refreshments. The doors open at 1 p.m. In addition to Longaberger Baskets, there will be wrought iron and pottery. For more information, contact Karen Sutton at 304-841-5718 or Denise Marsh at 304-457-5955.

Hats off to the city of Philippi, which has voted to support the local fire department with a fire fee ordinance. For a single-family home, the fee will only be $5 per month, or $60 per year. That cost is nothing compared to the peace in knowing that you are standing behind those volunteers who are always there when we are in need.

Animal Friends of Barbour County would like to invite you to its 14th annual St. Patrick’s Day Dinner at Adaland Mansion on March 19. Seating times are at 1 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. Reservations are required for the authentic Irish menu, which will be served buffet style. The cost for adults will be $24 and children under 12 is $10. For more information, contact Animal Friends at 304-823-2012.

The Philippi Public Library will be hosting “Seussapalooza” from 9 a.m. to noon on March 25, for ages 3 to 12. The event will be at The Market Place in Philippi. Call the Philippi Public Library at 304-457-3495 to register. Seating is limited.

Looking ahead, plans are being made for the annual Philippi Art Stroll on April 28. If you are a local artist or musician and would like to participate, contact Tammy Stemple at 304-457-3700, ext. 226, or Karen Larry at 304-457-3773.
