Barbour County cancer group to meet July 21

Hello, from Barbour County! I hear that we have a couple of new families in the county. There are some Amish neighbors who have purchased farms in the area. I have not seen them myself, but if you do happen to meet them, please make them feel welcome!

The Barbour County cancer support group will have its monthly meeting at 11 a.m. July 21 at the Medallion Restaurant in Philippi. This is open to all cancer survivors, caregivers and family members. For more information, call Deanna at 304-457-2684.

The ladies of Kasson United Methodist Ladies Aid would like to invite you to their ice cream social at 5 p.m. on July 22. There will be hot dogs, plate dinners, homemade ice cream and homemade pies. Turn off Rt. 92 at Kasson School and go 1/2 mile. If you have questions, please call Joyce at 304-823-1531 (daytime), or 304-457-1788 (after 5:30).

There will be a painting class at 6 p.m. on July 27 at the Market Place in Philippi. The cost will be $40, which includes everything you need to paint a beautiful picture of the Philippi Covered Bridge. All proceeds will benefit the Philippi Public Library. Relay For Life will be having its Survivor Dinner on July 29 at Camp Popeye, just outside of Belington. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the party starts at 6 p.m. Each survivor may bring a guest. The second annual Philip Barbour vs. Grafton Alumni Football game will take place at 7 p.m. on July 29. The game will be played at BC Bank Park at Philip Barbour High School. There is a registration fee of $20 per participant. The game will be open to the public with tickets being sold at the gate. All proceeds will benefit the Philip Barbour High School and Grafton High School football teams.

Philippi Public Library is having a quilt raffle. Tickets are $1 each or six tickets for $5. The beautiful lap quilt or wall hanging was made by the Covered Bridge Piecemakers. All proceeds benefit the Philippi Public Library Bookworms Team in the TCF Run For It and the Covered Bridge Piecemakers. The winning ticket will be drawn on Aug. 31.

Looking ahead, it won’t be much longer until school starts. Students in Barbour County return to school on Aug. 15. The clock of summer is winding down!

Registration for new students in Barbour County will be held on Aug. 8 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at your home school. You will need to bring the child’s birth certificate, Social Security number and shot records.
