Something better for us

Hebrews 11:40 says, “God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.”

For more than a month now the words “some better thing” have been on my mind. Something better deals with or refers to something better than what we have now.

My mind, for a while, has been trying to think of what could be better than what we have.

Something better than war is peace, especially if it is the “peace that passes all understanding.”

Something better than hatred is love. Something better than a storm is clear blue skies. Something better than snow is sunshine. Something better than problems are blessings. Something better than defeat is victory. Something better than sin is salvation. Something better than Satan is the Savior. Something better than looking to self is looking to Jesus. Something better than hell is heaven.

Look again at Hebrews 11:40, “God having provided some better thing for us. …”

In Hebrews 11:16, we read, “But now they desire a better country, that is heavenly. …” People are always looking for something better.

Some are looking for a better job. Some are searching for a better house. Some would like to have a better car. There are some parents who are praying and hoping their children will become better children. Because of the human nature that is within man, man is always on the lookout for something better.

The same thing is true when it comes to man’s spiritual life. There are some people who are looking for a better church. There are some people who believe that they could find a better pastor.

A man was visiting a church for the first time. When he came into the church, the pastor had already started preaching. The sermon had gone on for a long while. This visitor leaned over to the person next to him and whispered, “How long has he been preaching?” The man answered, “Almost 30 years.”

“Oh,” said the visitor. “I guess I’ll stay. He ought to be through real soon.”

There are some people who believe that they can find a better Bible. They are looking for something better in their spiritual life.

What does it mean to make the statement, “I want something better”? In Hebrews 11:16, the writer said, “But now they desire a better country, that is heavenly. …” The word country means homeland. Before we look at that, let’s think about a few other things.

We have some better things here. The Bible is a better book in this world. The Bible is the holy word of God. Our God is a perfect God. And His word is perfect.

Our relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ is a better relationship. That relationship is started the day you trust in Jesus Christ as your savior. After you are saved, you should grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ.

You will not live a perfect life in the world, but you will live a better life because you know Jesus Christ as your savior.

Now look at Hebrews 11:40, “God having provided some better thing for us.” Look at Hebrews 11:16. Is there a better country than where we live today? Is there a better homeland waiting up ahead of us somewhere in the future?

We live in a world that is nowhere near perfect. This world is not perfect because it is a sinful world. The world is not perfect because there are a lot of people in this world whose lives are filled with wickedness and ungodliness.

But for all those who know God and have trusted Jesus Christ as savior, God has “provided some better thing for us.”

There is a better country ahead of us. There is a better homeland off in the future. It is a place where there is no sin. Revelation 22:3 says, “And there shall be no more curse (sin).” It is a place where God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes: and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”

In this better country, everything is perfect. There is a peace that this world has never known. There is not fighting, there are no problems, there are no trials of any kind.

It is hard for us to imagine or think of a place like that because of where we live and what we have seen. But the Bible, God’s holy word, tells us that God is “providing some better thing for us.”

And that country, that homeland is heaven. Heaven is “some better thing.” And all those who go to heaven are those who trust and believe in Jesus Christ as their savior.

There is a song that says this: “I’m kind of homesick for a country, To a land I have never seen before. No sad goodbyes will be there spoken, and time won’t matter any more.

“Beulah Land, I’m longing for you, and someday on thee I’ll stand, Where my life will be eternal, Beulah Land, sweet Beulah Land.”

Do you know Jesus Christ as your savior? Have you trusted and believed in him? You can do that today.
