West Virginia landfills are required to have radioactivity monitors installed by Jan. 1, 2015. Other new landfill rules are being developed, according to state officials.

That is a good thing, in view of news a landfill near Bridgeport accepted gas well drilling waste that had been rejected at a Pennsylvania disposal facility because of higher-than-acceptable radioactivity. Drilling company officials insist the radioactivity was not harmful.

Still, the report should prompt state officials, including legislators, to reconsider landfill rules. If they do not provide at least the same level of protections as in neighboring states, they should be updated.
