Boos & Applause

Applause to all our local high school seniors taking part in graduation ceremonies this weekend and into this week. You’ve made it through childhood, and thanks to your hard work and dedication — and the help of your families and teachers — you are about to enter adulthood. We wish you the best of luck as you become the leaders of tomorrow.

Applause to J.C. Raffety, a former Elkins interim police chief who will once again serve as a United States Marshal, the second time he has done so in his impressive career. Raffety has been confirmed to serve in the position of United States Marshal for the Northern District of West Virginia, which includes court locations in Elkins, Clarksburg, Martinsburg and Wheeling. Raffety’s nomination began in early April, going through the United States Senate Judiciary Committee for review before moving on to the United States Senate for vote. It was announced this week that the Senate had confirmed the nomination, made by President Donald J. Trump.

Applause to the Snowshoe Foundation for presenting the Rotary Club of Elkins with a $25,000 check donation for the club’s amphitheater project in the Elkins Town Square behind the Elkins Depot. The Randolph County Commission and local businessman Mike Ross have also donated to the project recently.

Applause to the local high school track athletes who competed in the state track meet in Charleston last weekend. Some of our local track stars even set school records: The Elkins High 4×200 relay team of sophomore Sofia Triplett, senior Kaci Zopp, junior Nonee High and junior Tiara Rowe claimed a fourth-place finish at the state track meet, in the process breaking their own school record with a time of 1:49:25. Meanwhile, at the middle school level, the Elkins Middle School boys 4×100 meter relay team broke the school record at the Buckhannon Upshur Invitational on May 8 with a time of 53:20. The team then broke their own record at the Harry Green Invitational state meet on May 12 with a time of 52:96. The team consists of Isaiah Sigley, Elijah Viola, Aziah Benson-Pendleton and Sam Roberts.

Speaking of local athletes achieving major accomplishments, applause to Jesse Tallman, an 11th-grade student at Elkins High School, who recently took fifth place in the West Virginia Archery in the Schools state tournament, which earned her a spot in the national competition in Kentucky.
