Boos & Applause

Applause to everyone who cast a ballot in the general election Tuesday and took part in democracy. Applause also to all the election officials in our local counties who tallied the votes and got the results out to the public so quickly Tuesday night.

Applause to the many veterans events that took place this week and are scheduled for this weekend. On Thursday morning, Elkins High School students and officials held a ceremony honoring area veterans Thursday morning. Today the Veterans Parade through downtown Elkins will begin at noon. American Legion Post 29 will host its 99th Veterans Day Dinner at 7 p.m. today at 326 Railroad Ave. in Elkins. A Veterans Day ceremony is set for 11:11 a.m. at the All Veterans Memorial Sunday. Please take the time this weekend to honor veterans for their service and for keeping this country free.

Applause to Elkins High School teacher Penni Harris, who won the 2018 West Virginia Make it Shine Environmental Teacher of the Year Award for Intermediate Grades. An active-duty member of the military, Harris introduced the guest speaker at the EHS veterans ceremony Thursday. Harris is a West Virginia Army National Guard public affairs NCO with the 153rd public affairs detachment of Charleston.

Applause to the organizers and volunteers of the annual First United Methodist Church Women’s Fall Bazaar in Elkins, an event that brings people to town each year and raises money for a good cause. This year was no exception, as the event’s kickoff Thursday was packed with participants.

Applause to the Davis & Elkins College Triathlon team, which earned a fourth-place finish in the NCAA Division II classification of the USA Triathlon Collegiate National Championships this week. Finishing fourth in the nation in the sport’s inaugural year at D&E should be a source of great pride for the program.

Boo to campaign signs still being up. The general election was Tuesday. Why is the local landscape still littered with political signs? Are candidates and their supporters too lazy to take them down? This becomes a particularly offensive form of littering once the election is over. Let’s take the signs down, please.

Boo to putting an area Boy Scouts camp up for sale. Camp Mahonegan, which sits near the border of Randolph and Upshur counties, has been listed for sale with a $1.3 million asking price. An online petition to the Boy Scouts of America asking that the camp sale be prevented had garnered more than 5,000 signatures as of Friday evening. Bruce Nutter, who started the petition, wrote, “This is a sad day when local people donate land for local kids, and it ends up being sold by people outside of the state and on top of it the money will not even benefit our local kids.” Surely the BSA can come up with a better solution than just selling off this camp that’s been part of the local community for 70 years.
