Southern States thanks Barbour’s firefighters

Southern States Cooperative, Inc. would like to thank the Belington Volunteer Fire Department, Belington EMS and other area responders who responded on March 8 to a fire involving a Southern States propane truck at Sisolack Truck Repair on Talbott Road.

Due to the nature of the fire, Southern States deferred to the Belington VFD to contain it. As Chief Phil Hart previously indicated, it was initially thought that the most appropriate method to contain the fire was to allow the propane to burn slowly in a controlled manner. This was accomplished by the Belington VFD applying water to the truck’s tank while the flame continued its controlled burn. However, given the slower than expected pace of the burn, it became apparent that additional action was necessary to extinguish the flame. Therefore, Southern States engaged SWS Environmental Services to assist the Belington VFD to extinguish the fire and the same was completed on March 17.

Southern States appreciates the hard work of the members of the Belington VFD, Belington EMS and those in the community who supported these responders. Southern States also appreciates the patience of area residents during this time. Because the investigation is ongoing, Southern States will make no further comment at this time.
