YMCA pool project to benefit children

For almost 100 years, children and adults learned to swim, compete and play in the YMCA pool. About 50 years ago, the pool wore out and had to be replaced. Now, another 50 years have passed and the replacement pool must now be replaced.

Over the past 14 months, the Y has been working diligently to make that replacement a reality. Many, many people in Randolph County have contributed toward re-building the pool. Several large pledges need to be recognized, including a hefty pledge from our own Y board. The purpose of this letter, however, is to recognize both the vision and participation of all the citizens of our county.

Early on, the Randolph County Commission recognized the need to have a pool available for all its citizens and especially its children. The county needs a pool in which all its children can learn to swim and the commission wanted to reduce as many barriers as possible toward that end. The contribution from the county will be used to subsidize free swimming at the Y for all children up to 12 years old and living in Randolph County. Details continue to be worked out, but we all hope that all eligible children will use and enjoy the pool for many years to come … for free. Thank you, Randolph County Commission.
