Pro boxing bout highlights Toughman weekend at EHS

March 18, 2010

A professional boxing match between two local fighters will highlight this weekend’s Toughman festivities at Elkins High School’s Richard P. Simmons Memorial Gymnasium. The pro bout will take place on Saturday night and will pit Buckhannon’s Justin “Lumberjack” Howes (10-0) against Parsons’ “Wild” Bill Shahan (7-3) in a 10 round fight for the West Virginia heavyweight championship. “This will be the first time a pro heavyweight title will be on the line at a toughman contest,” said West Virginia Sports Promoter Jerry Thomas. “They’re both great boxers and both from the Elkins area, so were expecting a very entertaining fight.” The two heavyweights met in the boxing ring twice in past toughman contests with each fighter winning one fight. Howes is a three-time toughman champion (2003, 2005 and 2006) and Shahan won the title once in 2004. This will mark the seventh-straight year that the Toughman Contest has invaded Elkins. “We are expecting two good days of action,” said Thomas.
