W.Va. Children's Home Opened in 1909

    The West Virginia Children's Home was first  used as an orphanage when it was constructed in 1909. In 1935 the Army Corps of Engineers added on the kitchen, lounge and offices.

    The home was established in 1909 under the Humane Society. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.

    Carson Markely, Children's Home director, said that not much work has had to be done to maintain the facility except for installing central air and heating. They have also installed windows and repaired porches and patios.

    "I think it is important that the building was placed on the National Registry," Markely said.

    At one time in the home's early stages it was completely self-sustaining. The children helped work and raise farm animals .

    According to  Joe Carr, youth residential worker, one interesting piece of history in the building that there is a piano that was signed by jazz pianist Johnny Johnson.
