"When I was a deputy, I didn't see a problem with dropping my son off at school (in the cruiser)," said Brady said. "If I was driving down the street and had an accident, it was my fault and I never would have thought about suing the County Commission." ... yea right!!

Deputies need these cruisers to be kept at their residences while off duty in case of emergencies ... however, they should not be transporting civilians in those cruisers in any unofficial capacity ... you don't see folks dropping their kids off at school in milk trucks, garbage trucks, mail trucks, beer trucks, grocery trucks or company vehicles among others ... etc!!

Not sure if the new sheriff Coffman is staking out his territory with the Upshur County Commission, but he should choose his battles carefully, he has to live with them another four years. Maybe "dialing it down" a couple of notches would be very helpful Dave.

Former deputy Brady, now county commissioner admits to repeated/years of violating county commission policy and now he's a county commissioner. Is this a great country or what?

Actually, when you think about it, police officers transport civilians in their cruisers all the time. Every time they pick up a drunk, dope addict or criminal, they are transporting civilians. If they have an accident with one of these people in their cruiser, they are just as liable for that person's safety as they would be if it were a family member. The courts will not differentiate between the two. You are just as responsible for the safety of a criminal as you would be with any other passanger.
There are hundreds of cases where criminals sued and won judgements against police departments for being injured while being transported. And for the record, I have seen numerous commercial vehicles transporting children to school, work and other places, and it happens all the time with long haul truckers who pick up hitch hikers. I don't support these practices, but they do happen more often than you think. Even some of our presidents have done it.
