Reject threat to open government

March 4, 2014

Attempts to keep the people from learning what their government is doing behind closed doors often are framed by special interests as steps to rein in the imaginary monolith described as “the media....

To "report" something; aka 'news' this is what report is: to 'tell'; to describe; to chronicle; to specify; to communicate something.

Know what the OPPOSITE of that is? Conceal, delete, mask, screen, veil, delete, secrecy, suppression!!!

Know...which does the media do most? Understanding the 'synonymous' meanings of word gives you a better understanding, eh?

@Maj: the fact they call themselves "Journalists/news "reporters" speaks for itself. REporters are supposed to "report" news not MAKE up news/distort news or choose to 'not' report certain news. IT's SELF-EXPLANATORY!

Actually, it's one of those unwritten laws that doesn't exist, but should. When you have as much power as the media and reach so much of the population, it should be a written law.

Newspapers and media outlets are supposed to be unbiased and nonpartisan, but these days they are nothing more than a rabid mouthpiece for the left. They don't care about accuracy or fairness, unless of course the entity or person they're writing about happens to fit into the liberal's philosophy, like rapist, murderers or child molesters. Then they are careful to use words like alleged and accused even when the ones in question were caught red-handed. It's hard to be more guilty than being caught in the act of committing a crime, but leave it up to the media to inject doubt in their articles.

This article is a case of tripping over the facts in order to make their point, while ignoring the fact that their point of view would more than likely put an abused woman in danger by letting her abusive ex-spouse know she had acquired a concealed weapons permit for personal protection. I'm certain he'd be very appreciative of the paper for warning him about her firearm.

Most newspapers are quick to print one side of the issue while standing on the 1st amendment, and then ignore the down side of what they're up to. Gun control is always a hotbed issue with the media, but as usual, they only want to print the side of the story that fits into their agenda. An example of this is when two white men ran down a black man with their pickup in Texas a few years ago, but the same paper that ran the article completely ignored a similar incident when a white man was ran down and killed by blacks in a car. Apparently it's perfectly fine for blacks to run down white people, since nary a word was heard when the roles were reversed. All we heard was the media kicking and screaming, yelling racism to the top of their lungs until it was a white man lying in the road after a carload of blacks ran him down for entertainment.

The media needs to stop playing their games and step up to the plate and report both sides of the story. This one included.

Irresponsible reporting!

I guess we now know 100% where this paper stands. No need to 'expect' honest and truthful reporting. No expectations of unbiased reporting. No expectations of getting the truth or facts due to lazy reporting that cannot even find 'one' newspaper within same vicinity of theirs that DOES print names of permit holders.

WOW; talk about 'incompetent.' Several average citizens here today have shown 'they' are better at getting to the truth than 'professional' self-claiming reporters. We don't have 'reporters' anymore that only REPORT news; they want to MAKE (up) news!

Just in case you might want to voice your opinion about the Intermountain insistence on printing the names of concealed carry holders in their paper. Maybe the home office will have a different point of view on it.

If you VALUE your 2nd amendment RIGHT; cancel subscription to liberal newspapers/online OR print!

By supporting them; you are supporting the demise of your rights.

As Ronald Reagan used to say: "If you can't get them to change course....make them feel the heat!"

Truth: Apparently the people at this paper has never picked up a copy of the Record Delta in Buckhannon. They do it all the time. Maybe it's time someone starts getting the names of those who work at the Intermountain and run background checks on them, and then publish their background information on the internet? I wonder how they would like it if someone did that to them?

Media NEVER gives us the WHOLE TRUTH anyway. PASS THIS BILL; the PEOPLE demand it! ANd that is what dems in WV are listening to; not deceivers in the liberal media who ONLY print what they want for their partisan political motives.

WHY then no author of this article? Why not PRINT names of those women who have abortions? Why then not print names of school teachers arrested for molesting/abusing their students? Don't we also have a RIGHT to know these people??????????????????????????????????

Intermountain states:We know of no newspaper in West Virginia that has ever published lists of concealed carry permit applicants or holders.

LIE! THIS is why we cannot TRUST media outlets any longer. They work their 'deceit' for their 'liberal causes.'

Am not at all surprised these folks at this newspaper can't think of ONE paper that 'prints' permit carriers names. After all; there are NO REAL JOURNALISTS anymore. THIS proves that these unprofessionals lack qualification and skill for the job of "informing TRUTHFULLY the facts."

I did notice that the author of this article didn't have the backbone to publish their name with the article. In the name of fair play, doesn't the readers of this paper have the right to know who it is whose against their 2nd amendment rights, and their right to privacy concerning their concealed carry permit since it could cost them their life because this paper sees fit to warn every criminal within earshot of this publication about who carries a gun and who doesn't?

Journalist have never been very responsible. They use freedom of the press to infringe on another person's right to privacy, and they think their rights overrule everyone else's. I believe as a citizen and members of our society, I have the right to know who has abortions. They print the names of others who murder and harm people, so why not the names of those who murder innocent babies? Where do you draw the line?

Why not print the names of the doctors who overmedicate their patients and end up killing them, or the names of juveniles when they commit a crime? Don't we have the right to know regardless of age sow e can protect ourselves from them?

The media carries some things too far, and others not far enough, but this particular issue deals with gun control advocates, so the rights of concealed carry holders doesn't matter. Gun owners are fair game no matter what?

"For example, should a woman be banned from learning whether an abusive ex-spouse carries concealed weapons?" Now, let's look at the flip side of the coin. Let's say the abused woman decides she isn't safe any longer and SHE goes out and gets a concealed carry permit and you print it and the husband reads it. You just gave him the information he needs to avoid being shot, so heal alters his plan of attack and ambushes this woman, not leaving her with enough time to get to her gun to protect herself. Your insistence on printing the names of conceal carry holders just got this woman killed or severely injured because YOU felt it was your duty to give the identity of permit holders in your paper. Are you willing to accept the responsibility of what happened to this lady because you felt freedom of the press was more important than the woman's life?

Along with freedom of the press comes the responsibility of using that freedom in a way that it does not invoke harm on another person because of something you printed. You must remember this. Your freedoms only extend to the point that you infringe on another person's right. In this case, you are infringing on the right of privacy by printing these people's names in the local paper just so you have something to print. Trust me, this will come before the courts in the very near future, and if it is found that a person was harmed because of something your wrote in the paper, you will be help responsible for whatever harm came to the person you exposed.

Your paper printed MY name in the paper several years ago when I got mine, and trust me, if any harm had come to me because of that, I most certainly would have taken the case all the way to the Supreme Court if necessary, and I would have sued your paper for damages. It's called responsible journalism. You may want to try it.

The person responsible for this article is exactly what the problem in America is today. LIES; DECEIT.

The InterMountain may not have wanted to 'mention' their competition's paper, but they know full well that the Record Delta in Buckhannon has ALWAYS published all the names of those who get carry permits. Heck, the InterMountain has or had an office within 100 feet of the other papers office for quite some time. I ought to know as I would walk into both offices with letters to the editors frequently.

Liberal media IS the problem! Liberalism is the problem. These pathetic news media outlets through tv, internet AND news print have done citizens and this nation a great injustice when they CHOOSE to report lies and accomodate politicians for their own personal gain. Citizens no longer believe what they read or hear from media outlets OR politicians. You ruin yourselves!!! Enjoy the consequences.

This editorial has nothing to do with a "...threat to open government" and everything to do with the First and Second Amendments. How is it somehow acceptable for you to cry FOUL when you percieve that your First Amendment rights may be in question, yet it's somehow acceptable for you to trample on citizens' Second Amendment rights to defend your First Amendment rights? That type of thinking defies logic. I would liken it to you trampling people in a theatre fire to get to the exit, but it's somehow acceptable because you are exercising your right to life while preventing others the same right. Thre is not one valid argument for the public and the media to know or publish the names of concealed carry permit holders! The only entity that needs to know this information is law enforcement--period, end of story!

To the editor: First, your statement: "We know of no newspaper in West Virginia that has ever published lists of concealed carry permit applicants or holders." Were you actually looking for one or overlooking a newspaper that DOES PUBLISH the names of Concealed Carry Permit applicants and it's a mere 23 miles West of you--The Record Delta. Further, the Charleston Gazette has been publishing this information since the first CC permit was issued in Kanawha County decades ago.You have done a diservice to your readers by publishing incorrect information and a front page apology and correction is merited.

Democrats have lied so much; whined about things they can't have; whine about opposing opinions; whine because they think they should get paid to NOT work, etc...

We've had enough! Americans are not going to take the liberals crap any longer. See you at the polls in midterms. NO PROGRESSIVE DEMS!

Joe/typical liberal; they want to have guns...have right to say whatever they want, but want to STIFLE anyone else's speech and rights. This makes them COMMUNISTS; DICTATORS or rather 'wannabe dictators' because this isn't ever going to happen in America.

The MAJORITY are voting democrats OUT in midterm elections. WE'VE had enough of these traitors and we are NOT going to stop fighting them and voting out all the traitors in that party of socialist progressives.

There's NOTHING progressive about liberals. They're taking us back to NOTHING!
