An informal Friday evening gathering at the home of Dottie and Bob Wamsley in Chenoweth Creek started the activities for the weekend. A social hour, prior to a catered dinner and provided by the hosts, gave classmates time to reminisce with old friends as they listened to music of the 1950s.
Saturday evening was highlighted with a formal dinner at Graceland Mansion on the campus of Davis & Elkins College. A candlelight ceremony to honor deceased classmates ended with the reunion and balloons were released to honor those who had passed.
Larry Ferguson and Benny Siler served as masters of ceremonies, and Jim Mouse led the group in its version of the Statler Brothers song, “The Class of ’57.” A skit was presented by Sharon McQuain and Jackie Bright, representing two classmates struggling to get ready to go to the party.
Margaret “Peg” Rector was recognized as the classmates former teacher, and was presented with a corsage from the group. Also recognized were three of the four sets of twins from the class — the Hayes, Jack and Schoonover twins. Gag gifts were passed out, and a thank-you rose bouquet and framed print of the old Elkins High School were presented to Dottie Wamsley in appreciation of her hosting the previous night’s activities.
Several keepsake items were donated by classmates and were auctioned off during the evening. The auction raised $200, which was donated to the EHS Alumni Association for use in its work for the school. Each classmate attending brought a door prize and the evening ended with the exchanging of those items.
A Sunday brunch at the Elkins Motor Lodge concluded the activities of the weekend. The group voted to have their next reunion in three years.
