The two-story, 250-seat restaurant will have two kitchens, two patios, a gift shop and a lounge area to serve tour groups, train riders and locals, Elbon explained. And with more than 300 tour busses scheduled to stop in Elkins in 2008, according to Elbon, the restaurant should have a number of patrons.
“It’ll be a big plus for Elkins,” Elbon said.
Brick will cover the exterior of the restaurant and the roof will look similar to the one on the railroad depot, Elbon said. Elbon designed the building himself and hopes the project will be completed by late June.
“This is a big undertaking and I’ve had fun doing it,” Elbon exclaimed.
Although Elbon owns the building it will be leased to a local party, which operates the railroad themed restaurant, he explained. The name of the restaurant is still under wraps, but Elbon expects it will be revealed soon.
A restaurant isn’t the only plan Elbon has for the railyard. He’s also planning to construct a building — with a facade similar to old, small rail depots — to house retail shops, he explained. Even though he’s excited about the upcoming project, it won’t be under way until next year.
