Upshur Wraps Up County Fair

West Virginia Secretary of State Betty Ireland helped kick off the Upshur County Fair in Rock Cave Friday.
Ireland, the first woman to be elected to the state's executive branch of government, was the guest speaker during the opening ceremonies.
During her speech, Ireland said that for the first time, military men and women, along with civilians stationed overseas, will be able to vote using e-mail through a secure server on the Department of Defense Web site.
Ireland, the 28th secretary of state, said she did not seek re-election this year because of the health of her parents.
"I could not care for them, run for election and operate the election as the state's chief executive officer," she said. " Hopefully my name will appear on the ballot again in the future."
Dr. Richard Hoover served as master of ceremonies and Sherri Hoover sang the "Star Spangled Banner." Queen Bryanna Reger and Teen Queen Courtney Dean were at the opening ceremonies along with Boy and Girl Scouts troops from southern Upshur County.
Several local officials were on hand for the fair, including Delegate Bill Hamilton, R-39th District, Upshur County Sheriff Virgil Miller, and County Commissioners Donnie Tenney, Eugene Suder and Creed Pletcher.
Several events including crafters and vendors, a talent show, various bands, a dunking booth, exhibits and several other events highlighted the weekend of activities at the fair.
The Victory Praisers won the talent show Friday night and also performed their sign language routine on Saturday. Also performing on Saturday were and Raleigh McCoy and The Legends and Josh Oldaker
Fair association president Gary Bonnett thanked everyone for coming out and recognized all the volunteers for their hard work.
The fair wrapped up Sunday with the state wood chopping competition, a car show, gospel sing and more. Organizers said the fair was a success.
